BPI Trainings

The Building Performance Institute (BPI) is the national leader in setting standards and certifying professionals in home performance, energy efficiency, and healthy homes. BPI credentials are widely recognized by utilities, state programs, and industry partners, making them a trusted indicator of technical skill and professionalism.

BPI’s certification pathway supports multiple career directions—from gaining basic building-science knowledge to performing diagnostic testing in the field to conducting full home-energy audits and developing retrofit recommendations. These credentials are valuable for contractors, energy auditors, weatherization professionals, technicians, and anyone pursuing roles in retrofitting, residential energy efficiency or building-science consulting. Overall, BPI certifications demonstrate competence, credibility, and commitment to quality. They help practitioners qualify for more job opportunities, participate in incentive programs, and deliver safer, healthier, and more efficient homes for the communities they serve.

EnerCity Collaborative has been a Building Performance Institute (BPI) test center serving home-performance and energy-efficiency professionals throughout the Portland metro area since 2022. ECC's flagship training program guides students along the BPI pathway, taking them from foundational Building Science Principles (BSP) through the hands-on Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) level, and ultimately to the advanced Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) certification. Learn More about BPI training and ECC here!

Building Science Principles (BSP)

Overview:
The Building Science Principles (BSP) certificate provides a foundational understanding of building science and how different components of a home work together. It introduces key concepts related to the building envelope, heating and cooling, insulation, mechanical ventilation, lighting, appliances, and other systems that influence comfort, health, and efficiency.

Audience:
Individuals entering the residential energy or construction sector, or those who need a solid building-science foundation before pursuing hands-on technical certifications.

The BSP certificate is also the required prerequisite for the BPI Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) certification, the BSP exam is an online open book 100-question multiple choice exam with a passing score of 70%.

Building Analyst Technician (BA-T)

Overview:
The Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) is an early-career credential for workers entering the home performance and energy efficiency field. It introduces the fundamentals of building science and trains students in the data collection and diagnostic testing used in whole-home assessments.

Students gain hands-on experience with inspecting building systems, conducting blower-door and combustion-safety tests, measuring indoor air quality, sampling ambient air, evaluating combustion appliance safety and collecting the data needed to understand how building systems interact to influence comfort, health, and energy efficiency.

Audience:

Newer workers in the energy efficiency industry who want to continue their education in building science. The BA-T is a proctored, four-hour field exam that includes oral questions, has no written component, and requires a passing score of 70% or higher.

Building Analyst Professional (BA-P)

Overview:
The Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) course builds on the concepts introduced in the BSP and BA-T to teach advanced skills used in home energy assessment. Students learn how to perform building analysis, evaluate collected data, and use energy modeling to produce comprehensive home performance reports and scopes of work. This certification reflects a deep understanding of building science and whole-home system interactions.

Audience:

Designed for mid-level professionals in the energy efficiency or weatherization industry who want to demonstrate expert-level knowledge.

The BA-P is an online exam consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions, with a 2.5-hour time limit and a required passing score of 70% or higher.
